Two distinct types of turbidity currents observed in the Manila Trench, South China Sea

چکیده
Abstract Sediment gravity flows are the most direct and efficient transport mechanisms for moving terrestrial sediments into deep oceans. Scarcity of firsthand measurements, however, has hindered quantitative, even qualitative characterization such flows. Here we present a unique year-long data record from ~4000 m depth in Manila Trench that captured two very different terms their hydraulic sedimentary properties. The first flow was slow speed (~40 cm s −1 ) long duration (~150 h), thus nicknamed ‘Tortoises’, carried fine sediment with low concentration (~0.01%). fast but short-lived h) flow, ‘Hares’, much coarser higher (~1.2%). Clay mineral compositions suggest ‘Tortoises’ originated upstream canyon wall slumping, whereas ‘Hares’ likely submarine canyons southwest Taiwan Island due to typhoon. Grain size is key factor determining evolution turbidity currents.

Status of Rocks in the Law of the Sea with Relying on the South China Sea Arbitration Award
Abstract Islands and rocks are entitled different maritime zones in international law of the sea. Article 121(3) allocated to rocks has articulated briefly and without indicating any definitions or characters of this feature. Paragraph 3 provided two conditions for rocks in order to create exclusive economic zone and continental shelf zone. The South China Sea tribunal has interpreted this pa...
متن کاملTwo functionally distinct ciliates dwelling in Acropora corals in the South China Sea near Sanya, Hainan Province, China.
We detected and characterized two distinct scuticociliate ciliates inside Acropora corals in the South China Sea. One, voraciously foraging on Symbiodinium, resembled the brown band disease of ciliates. The other, which is closely related to Paranophrys magna, grazed on detritus instead of Symbiodinium. These two ciliates may serve contrasting functions (competitor versus "cleaner") in the cora...
متن کاملObserved drag coefficients in high winds in the near offshore of the South China Sea
This paper investigates the relationships between friction velocity, 10m drag coefficient, and 10m wind speed using data collected at two offshore observation towers (one over the sea and the other on an island) from seven typhoon episodes in the South China Sea from 2008 to 2014. The two towers were placed in areas with different water depths along a shore-normal line. The depth of water at th...
